He was a rock, this guy--a guy who always pushed himself. Being a Ranger wasn't enough, so he made thousands of jumps in preparation for becoming a member of the Golden Knights parachute team (which he narrowly missed), and when that didn't work out, he joined Special Forces, ending his illustrious career as a Green Beret. They don't build 'em like him anymore. RIP Johnny... You are sorely missed, brother!
Like the song, "Bittersweet Departure," written in memory of my mother, this song hurt like hell to write, but was absolutely critical for my healing. It was written the day after I learned that Johnny, a great friend who survived the war, and only recently had met and married his soulmate, had passed away. It was played at his funeral, and his brother Hugh wrote me afterwards stating how much healing it had brought those in attendance.
