The Dreams Of Ol' Jimmy

© 1993 Jeffrey E. McCaskill. All Rights Reserved.

They call me Ol' Jimmy, but I'm not so old
At least not so old that I've no call for dreamin'
It's what keeps me goin', it's why I sail on
For mine are the dreams of a Bun Dobhráin seaman.

I dream of a boat, nay, a ship of my own
A two-masted schooner, her sails fully blown
To ply the green water, both here and abroad
Just me and the wind and the water and God.

CHORUS
And it's Hi-Hi-Hey-Dee
Hi-Dee-Hi-Dee-O-Aye
I hope I'm a sailin'
The day that I die.

I've never been lucky at money or love
And once in a while, I've blamed Him above
Who tries me for what seems His own cruel delight
In hopes that I'll call on Him some teary night.

My faith, it is centered, when I'm on the sea
Enjoying the mysteries that she bears to me
So, while I may suffer whene'er I'm ashore
Once I'm on the briny, I suffer no more.

CHORUS
And it's Hi-Hi-Hey-Dee
Hi-Dee-Hi-Dee-O-Aye
I hope I'm a sailin'
The day that I die.

Yeah, they call me Ol' Jimmy, but I'm not so old
At least not so old that I've no call for dreamin'...
