She Never Let Me Know

Don’t deserve the blessings that the springtime brings
I guess I’m not alone in this
My head is filled to breaking with such worldly things
Oh, what I would give to taste her kiss.
Hear the songbirds singing in the evening trees
Their longing notes can drive a man to tears
I guess it’s selfish hoping they will sing for me
Against the coming darkness that I fear.
She left a wake of sorrow when she flew away
Without a note and phone calls unreturned
She never bothered sharing why she could not stay
She simply lit a fire and let me burn.
Tonight’s so quiet I can almost feel her here
Sneaking out the door on painted toes
Drowning in a flood of thoughts I hold so dear
‘Bout the girl who never let me know.
